Academics
Preparing Students for the 21st Century
At P.S. 254, we believe in teaching with purpose and high standards. Our goal is to give every student a strong academic foundation that prepares them for success in the 21st century. Our teachers work hard to go beyond expectations and make sure all students have access to learning that is meaningful, creative, and connected to the world around them.
Welcome to the Classroom!
A Project-Based Curriculum
Our curriculum is built around Project‑Based Learning (PBL). This hands‑on approach encourages students to explore real‑world questions, problems, and challenges. Through longer, student‑led projects, students learn grade‑level skills in meaningful and engaging ways. PBL also helps students develop key 21st‑century skills—like critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and communication—that prepare them for college, careers, and life. Technology and Computer Science
We use a technology‑rich curriculum that helps students build strong digital skills and learn the basics of Computer Science.
- All students have access to laptops and other devices in their classrooms, as well as in our Computer Lab and Library Media Center.
- We are also proud to be a pilot school for New York City’s Computer Science for All (CS4ALL) initiative. Through this program, students learn coding and computer science as part of their core subjects.
Academic Support
We offer a full range of Special Education (SPED) services for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). We also provide academic support for any student struggling to master grade-level standards. Your child’s teachers will work with you to identify your child’s needs and make sure they are getting the help they need to be successful.
After-School Programs
We offer an After-School program in partnership with Greater Ridgewood Youth Council. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for youths and families in the borough of Queens through service. The GRYC fosters a climate of purposeful inclusion where all can feel respected, safe, and connected. This is a free program via a lottery system.
